A trip to the Banda Sea in 2016, on what was essentially the inaugural ‘Banda Blues & Hammers’ expedition, brought the team together in fortuitous circumstances; all of us already with at least one person in common, but not interconnected, yet.
Benjamin Kahn, scientist & renound cetacean expert a.k.a. “Pak Paus”, and Johannes Hennicke, Cruise Director, PADI Speciality Instructor & spotter extraordinaire, had worked together extensively on research expeditions over recent years, and first coined the Banda Blues and Hammers idea. Alice Grainger, the orchestrator of this particular expedition, Editor of the two leading dive magazines in South East Asia brought Rachel Mason, expedition guest, (corporate) business & project manager, avid diver (and soon to be defacto expedition research assistant), into the fray.
Fast forward to Singapore ADEX 6 months later, post expo drinks outside the venue and the four of us recognising what an incredible combination of experience, skills and qualifications we had between us, with a common passion for the oceans, cetaceans and conservation. With such a perfect combination, why wouldn’t we legitimise and perpetuate something that had already proven to be a hugely successful collaboration. So, as the best things often happen, 2 drinks later, Planet Deep was born.
